König-Johann-Runde: castle ruin, Buntsandstein and wide summer views

The König-Johann-Runde covers 12 km through stream valleys, past mighty sandstone walls and up to viewpoints that reach far across the Saartal.

Some hikes have a name that makes you curious. King Johann the Blind of Bohemia, Count of Luxembourg, had the castle ruin Freudenburg built from 1330 onwards – giving his name not only to the town but also to this 12 km loop. Those who start here are literally walking in the footsteps of medieval rule.

Start at the Weiherplatz in Freudenburg

The starting point of the König-Johann-Runde is at the Weiherplatz in Freudenburg, right next to the old town wall. Parking is available directly at the castle complex – which saves a long search. Those arriving by public transport: the tour is reachable by local public transport, for example from Saarburg. From there it is just a few kilometres by bus.

The trail is signposted throughout and certified as a premium hiking trail – which genuinely holds true here. The signage is good, the route clear. Even so, I recommend downloading the Komoot tour to your phone in advance, especially in the Leukbachtal, where the paths become narrower.

Through stream valleys and past sculptures

Shortly after the start, the route initially heads away from the castle – seemingly in the wrong direction. But this is intentional: the route climbs up to the Eiderberg, a nature reserve with species-rich calcareous grasslands. Those who walk here in early summer will see rare orchids in bloom. In July the plateau presents itself in lush green beneath a brilliantly blue sky, with wide panoramas over fields, forests and the wind turbines on the horizon – a view that makes the ascent worthwhile on its own. Pack binoculars, seriously.

Further down in the valley, a natural stone stairway path leads through dense foliage – narrow, somewhat enchanted, with warm light falling through the canopy. Those who walk quietly here have a good chance of spotting deer on the neighbouring meadows. Along the path you come across a row of historic stone sculptures on a dry grass clearing between old trees – a quiet cultural trail in the middle of the greenery, which is particularly impressive during the golden hour.

The Leukbachtal is one of the highlights of the second half of the route. Narrow passages, Buntsandstein rocks, small waterfalls – this is the so-called Kollesleuker Schweiz, an apt name. The rocks are partly vivid red, the stream babbles between them, old mills stand along the path. Rarely does a premium trail feel so untouched.

The Burgruine Freudenburg – destination and highlight in one

Shortly before the end of the loop, the castle ruin itself awaits. The mighty sandstone walls rise up on a bow-shaped rocky plateau – three storeys above the rock face, freestanding, freely accessible. Sturdy footwear is essential, the terrain is uneven. Those who arrive early in the morning will see the red sandstone glow in the slanting light; those who come towards evening will experience the silhouette against the evening sky. Through the narrow Romanesque round-arch windows you look out over the wide hilly landscape – with a little patience you’ll find the angle where wind turbines on the horizon are framed by the stone arch.

A little insider tip for anyone who has a bit of extra time: just before the return leg, pass by the Jewish cemetery – it dates from the time of the Thirty Years’ War and lies quietly at the edge of the forest, barely visited, but remarkable.

The tour is located in Rheinland-Pfalz, in the Saarburger Land, and pairs well with a visit to Saarburg, where a real waterfall flows right through the town. Those who have been here once will come back.
