Fallow deer, fox and the cradle of the Nahe – Nahequelle Pfad in 6.2 km

The Nahequelle Pfad leads to the source of one of the most beautiful upland rivers — and along the way past fox, fallow deer, and wide summer panoramas.

Some hikes have that one moment that overshadows everything else. On the Nahequelle Pfad, it was the fox for me. He was simply standing in the tall meadow grass, glanced briefly in my direction, and then ambled off unhurriedly — no rush, no fright. Encounters like that don’t happen on asphalted cycle paths. They happen here, across 6.2 km between summer meadows, forest paths, and a moss-covered rocky enclosure from which a small trickle emerges that eventually — 125 kilometres later — flows into the Rhine at Bingen as a sizeable river.

What to expect on the Nahequelle Pfad

The circular route starts at the car park near Selbach, a small district of Nohfelden in the Sankt Wendeler Land. Just shortly after the start you reach the actual Nahequelle: a small trickle of water bubbling out of moss-covered boulders, with a historic stone plaque beside it bearing the inscription “Nahe Quelle”. The moment is quieter than expected — no roar, no tourist bustle, just forest silence and the barely audible murmur of the spring water.

From there the path winds uphill. The elevation profile is pleasantly moderate: you start at just under 460 metres, climb briefly to just over 535 metres — the highest point lies on what is known as the “Sengert” — and return to almost the same elevation at the car park. Anyone with sturdy walking shoes will get through without any trouble. I would not recommend a pushchair, however, as several sections consist of narrow, natural forest paths.

Wildlife, panoramas, rest stops — what makes the route special

What surprised me: how much wildlife you encounter on this short loop if you walk quietly. Three fallow deer fawns in the meadow, then two young fallow deer bucks grazing — I had binoculars with me and was glad of it. Your best chances are early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the light is at its most beautiful anyway and the grass is still covered in morning dew.

Between the forested sections the landscape opens up again and again: golden summer meadows, an earthy track along a grass-covered embankment in the backlight, then suddenly a wide panorama over a hilltop with a lookout tower and a nestled village — a view worth capturing. At one of the rest stops there is a rustic wooden swing frame made from crossed tree trunks, surrounded by wildflower meadows. I sat down there for a while and just took it all in.

An insider tip along the way: the path passes the Wildfreigehege, where red deer can be observed — and if you’re lucky, you’ll experience one of the quietest moments of the day there. At the end of the loop there is also a “Bücherbaum” right by the source, from which you can take literature to borrow or swap — a charming little idea that suits this relaxed route perfectly.

• Refreshments: No catering directly on the route — pack something with you. If you’re looking for a fresh drink: on Birkenfelder Straße in Selbach there is a milk vending machine with fresh milk straight from the farm.
• Best time of year: Summer for the lush greenery and wildlife watching, autumn for colour in the forest. The route lies within the Naturpark Saar-Hunsrück and is a certified premium hiking trail.
• Equipment: Sturdy footwear with grip, forest paths can be slippery when wet. Binoculars are definitely worth bringing.
• Suitable for: Families with children who are good on their feet, nature lovers, photographers — not recommended for pushchairs.

Summary
