Poppy red and forest shadow: Georgi-Panoramaweg near Mitlosheim

The Georgi-Panoramaweg draws you in with glowing poppy fields, quiet streams and sweeping panoramas – 13.5 km well worth doing.

Sometimes you come across a trail that delivers more than promised. The Georgi-Panoramaweg is one of those. Just shortly after the start at the Rittscheid-Hütte on the edge of Mitlosheim (municipality of Losheim am See, Landkreis Merzig-Wadern), you sense that this 13.5 km loop is no run-of-the-mill route: marshland, deciduous forest, orchard meadow, open fields – and in June a riot of colour from red poppies and blue cornflowers that stops you in your tracks.

Start: Rittscheid-Hütte and the first impression

The car park at the Rittscheid-Hütte is free and easy to reach – set your sat nav to Mitlosheim, edge of town in the direction of Rittscheid. From here the route initially leads flat along the Lannenbach. To the right, an expansive area of marshland opens up, through which the path leads along a narrow trail. Early in the morning, mist sometimes still lingers in the hollows here – anyone who wants to experience that should set off before eight o’clock.

The Georgi-Panoramaweg is, incidentally, named after Dr. Hanspeter Georgi, the former Minister of Economic Affairs of the Saarland, who played a major role in shaping nature-based hiking tourism in the region. The Deutsches Wanderinstitut has rated the certified premium trail with 73 experience points – an accolade that is easy to appreciate on this loop.

Middle section: field paths, poppies and open panoramas

After the short but noticeable climb up to the ridge, the landscape opens up. For me, this is where the strongest part of the tour begins. Wide field paths wind between wheat fields and cornfields, wind turbines turn on the horizon, and at the edge of the fields – this is the image I can’t get out of my head – a dense sea of poppies and cornflowers blooms from mid-May to early July. Bright red on green, blue in between, and above it all a wide summer sky. Get the camera out, take your time.

Between the trees at the edge of the field, natural frames open up onto views across the open hill country. Turn around and you’ll see wooded hilltops in the haze – the quiet up here is tangible. The waymarking of the Traumschleifen (blue logo on wooden posts) is consistently reliable; I never had to search.

Second half: stream, wooden bridges and forest paths

After the open field sections, the path dips back into deciduous forest. Narrow trails with a dense canopy overhead, ferns on both sides, muted light – a complete contrast to the sunny grain fields just before. At the romantic streambed of the Hölzbach, a picnic table invites you to rest; the small wooden bridge at the ford shortly after is one of the most charming details of the entire loop. Upstream, the green is reflected in the calm water.

If you’re lucky, you’ll spot deer grazing at the edge of the forest. I didn’t – but I’ve read about it several times and believe it immediately, it’s that quiet here. The route continues through the Ruwerbachtal nature reserve, past the Weierweiler Mühle campsite and a small orchard meadow, until the houses of Mitlosheim come back into view and the Rittscheid-Hütte welcomes you back.

Practical information

• Start & parking: Wanderparkplatz Rittscheid-Hütte, Mitlosheim (free, GPS: approx. 49.526° N, 6.777° E)
• Length & elevation profile: 13.5 km, around 300 to 344 m elevation – barely any change in altitude, family-friendly apart from one short steep climb
• Duration: approximately 3.5 to 4 hours without longer breaks
• Best time of year: June is ideal – poppy bloom, lush green, long evening light; autumn (October) is also worthwhile for the foliage colours
• Refreshments: Kättchen Café in Weierweiler (Dorfstraße 12, Sun from 11 a.m.) is almost directly on the route – a perfect stop at the halfway point; Rittscheid-Hütte at the start for a short rest
• Equipment: Sturdy footwear with grip – some sections are wet and muddy after rain, especially the trails in the nature reserve; insect repellent for the marsh sections in summer
• Getting there: Via the A8, exit Losheim am See, then towards Mitlosheim; also accessible by bus (line from Merzig)

One more tip for early risers: the marshland just after the start lies so deep in the valley in the Saar-Hunsrück area that in June, even on warm days, wisps of mist linger well into the early morning – seen from the viewpoints up on the ridge, it’s a sight you can hardly plan for, but sometimes simply stumble upon.
