Schauinslandweg: observation towers, ponds and a wooden gate in the forest

The Schauinslandweg takes you across 10.8 km over open meadows, through gorges and past quiet ponds – with panoramic views included.

I am not someone who sorts hikes by difficulty level. I set off when the light is right and I am curious. With the Schauinslandweg near Ottweiler, both were in place: early summer, a light breeze, cumulus clouds over the hills – and a route that keeps opening up and revealing new views.

Start at the Schafbrücker Mühle

The classic starting point is the car park at the Randsbachweiher between Wiebelskirchen and Ottweiler, directly opposite the Schafbrücker Mühle. Already here the first pond lies quietly before you, ducks drifting on the surface, mixed forests climbing the slope in the background. Those arriving by train take bus 302 from Neunkirchen or Ottweiler to the Schafbrücker Mühle.

The first few metres follow the bank, then the path turns onto a field track and climbs. Exactly at that moment you notice what makes the Schauinslandweg special: a short ascent, and you are standing on a ridge with an open view over meadows, wooded hilltops and – depending on the weather – far down into the valley. That continues throughout the whole tour.

What awaits you on the 10.8 km

The route is a certified premium hiking trail, and you can tell by the variety: orchards alternate with dense deciduous forest, field paths lead across open hilltops, and signposts pointing to viewpoints keep appearing along the way. At one of them stands a slender steel observation tower with a zigzag staircase – wind turbines behind it, blue sky above. This is no picturesque Black Forest tower, but an honest mid-range mountain backdrop, and that is exactly what I like about it.

A highlight you should not miss: the rustic wooden gate with the sign “Flowtrail Ottweiler”. No entry for hikers – but a great stop. When mountain bikers ride through the gate, you get a brief shot of adrenaline thrown in for free. Right next to it, the path opens onto a wide meadow with a sweeping panorama.

Further along the route, an old sandstone fountain waits in the greenery, overgrown and silent, with a delicate metal spout – once a drinking water source for hikers, today a photographic subject in the shade. Not far from it, a meadow path winds between deciduous trees that positively glow after a rain shower.

The Kerbacher Loch – the quietest moment of the tour

Those who look carefully will eventually find the entrance to the gorge “Kerbacher Loch” – a narrow, enchanting ravine with a picturesque stream, where even a wild boar carved in stone waits for you. That is one of those moments you cannot explain to anyone in advance. Just go.

Shortly before the end of the loop there is one more idyllic pond, framed by mixed woodland, with a mirror-smooth surface in the midday sun. This is where I took my longest break. Ducks, silence, deep blue sky.

• Refreshments: Hotel-Restaurant Schafbrücker Mühle right at the start (also ideal after the tour); Hiemshütte of the Wanderverein Wiebelskirchen on the route
• Equipment: Sturdy hiking boots with grip – individual sections of the trail, especially the gorge passages, require sure-footedness
• Best time: early summer (May–June) for full meadows and long-distance views; after stormy nights an early start is worthwhile when the green still glistens wet
• Dogs: Allowed, well suited according to the community

Who comes here?

The Schauinslandweg is not for people who need hustle. It is quiet, it is green, it has real viewpoints rather than imitation ones. I experienced it on an early summer day with a light breeze and cumulus clouds – that was just right. Anyone looking for a day hike with genuine natural character in Saarland and not wanting to spend two hours getting there will find exactly what they are looking for here.
