🐜 Ameisenschleife around Osburg & Riveristalsperre (OS2)
The Ameisenschleife OS2 combines quiet forest paths, soft moss cushions and scenic hillside trails above the Riveris stream. Between ferns, spruce and deciduous woodland, views of the Riveristalsperre open up again and again – sometimes through the trees, sometimes straight onto the dam wall. 👉 Route on Komoot: Go to the tour here.
🧭 Starting out & trail feel
From the edge of Osburg, the first section leads gently into the mixed forest. After a few minutes, the typical loop feeling sets in: muffled sounds, soft forest floor, the quiet crunch of leaves underfoot. The waymarking leads in a varied way over forestry tracks and natural paths; the pace stays calm and steady – ideal for unwinding.
🌿 Ants, moss & forest details
The trail takes its name from the wood ants, whose mounds can be spotted along the path with a little attention. On open hilltops lie mossy carpets in which roots and stones stand out – a fine pattern that appears particularly three-dimensional in raking light. In autumn, the leaves add warm colour accents, with mushrooms appearing here and there among them.
👣 Hillside path with a view
At the open edges, a comfortable hillside path runs above the stream valley. Dense forest to the left, an open view across the opposite slopes to the right. The loop remains moderate overall; small rooty and gravelly sections provide natural variety without becoming technically demanding.
💧 At the Riveristalsperre
Between the tree trunks the water of the reservoir first flashes through, then the dam wall comes into full view. Blue water, rusty-red oaks, dark spruce – the interplay of colours is especially striking in late autumn. Depending on the water level, shorelines and pebbly coves are visible; please respect the bank areas and stay on the paths.
🛖 Rest spots & quiet corners
Several small benches and a simple shelter offer places to rest. The most beautiful spots are the quiet places at the forest edge, where the sun draws patterns through the canopy and the wind moves softly through the leaves. Bring your own food and drinks – the loop is deliberately nature-focused and has no reliable refreshment stops directly on the route.
🦌 Brief wildlife moments
With a bit of luck, deer will cross the path, squirrels dart up the trunks and flocks of tits accompany you as you walk. Please be considerate: stay calm, observe from a distance and keep to the paths – that way these brief encounters remain stress-free for everyone.
📏 Route & difficulty
The length varies depending on the chosen loop, at around 11 km. Elevation gain is spread gently; a few short ramps are included but remain very manageable. Surface: predominantly forest tracks, interspersed with narrow paths, with roots, leaf cover or damp clay soil in places. Difficulty: easy to moderate. In wet conditions, wood, leaves and clay sections can be slippery.
🧳 Equipment
Sturdy, grippy shoes are the best choice. In cooler seasons, a windproof layer and a dry place to sit for a snack break are worthwhile. Anyone taking photos will find subjects in moss cushions, mushrooms, ant mounds and at the viewing windows towards the reservoir.
📌 Tips
- Choose a quiet time of day: Early morning or late afternoon brings beautiful raking light in the forest.
- Take care in wet conditions: Leaves and roots can be slippery; place your steps carefully, use of poles is optional.
- Respect the paths: The bank zones of the reservoir are protected areas – please do not take shortcuts.
- Variants: Short detours to viewpoints at the open edges are worthwhile – finding your way back to the main path is straightforward.
- Use Komoot: The linked tour helps at junctions and provides reliable orientation.

📝 Tour summary
The Ameisenschleife (OS2) combines quiet forest paths, soft moss cushions and wide views of the Riveristalsperre into a well-rounded, harmonious loop. After a relaxed start, open spruce sections and leafy sunken lanes alternate; the hillside path runs smoothly and repeatedly opens up views into the valley. At the reservoir, the narrow waterside passage creates a clear contrast to the forest – especially in autumn, when colours and light are reflected on the water. Small moments in nature – mushrooms, fern-lined edges or a deer by the path – give the tour its quiet character. Overall easy to moderate and ideal for winding down after a full day: arrive, breathe, walk.
