City walk through Halle (Saale) – how the tour came about
On August 15, 2025, a special occasion brought me to Halle (Saale) – picking up my new car. Since there was still time before the handover, I took the opportunity to explore the city on foot. This gave rise to a roughly 11.5-kilometre walk that, in just under three hours, offered not only exercise on a hot summer’s day but also fascinating insights into architecture, history and green retreats. For anyone who wants to experience the city not just superficially but consciously, a city loop like this is ideal.

📍 A varied city loop
The route connects central squares, historic buildings and shaded parklands. With around 90 metres of ascent and descent, the tour is pleasantly manageable. It leads through narrow lanes, across lively squares and along green open spaces. In doing so, Halle can be experienced in a completely different way than on a classic city tour – step by step, at your own pace.
🏛️ History meets modernity
Along the way, impressive buildings such as the Marktkirche, the storied Freyberg-Brauerei or the Paul-Riebeck-Stiftung define the scene. Modern sculptures, fountains and artworks provide exciting contrasts. Particularly impressive is the path through the historic centre, where the market square with the Roter Turm, the Händel monument and the towers of the Marktkirche are among the absolute highlights.
🌳 Discovering green Halle
Anyone who thinks a city walk means nothing but concrete and streets will quickly be proven wrong in Halle. Numerous parks, small squares and quiet retreats break up the route. Particularly worth seeing are the Lebenskreis am Domplatz, the Eselsbrunnen and the green areas around the Moritzburg. Especially on hot summer days, shaded paths offer a welcome respite.
🎨 Cultural highlights
Those with an interest in culture will also get their money’s worth on this walk. The Moritzburg today houses an art museum with a diverse collection, while the Leopoldina, as Germany’s oldest academy of natural scientists, stands for science and history. The Paulus-Kirche in the Paulusviertel, with its striking brick architecture, is one of the most impressive buildings in the city.
📌 Tips for the tour
Bring enough water – especially in summer, the city centre heats up quickly.
Keep your camera ready – sculptures, fountains and buildings are very photogenic.
Wear good footwear – cobblestones and smaller inclines can be tiring.
If you have time: round off the tour with a café on the market square or by the Saale.
