Hotel Schloss Friedestrom right on the Rhine, family-run, 5/5 points – I explain why that’s no coincidence here.
There are hotels where everything simply comes together. Hotel Schloss Friedestrom in Dormagen-Zons is one of those places. I rarely give full marks – here it was not a difficult decision.
Arrival: this entrance says it all
The hotel makes a clear statement from the outside alone. The entrance area with its elaborately decorated golden canopy is simply impressive – not a tacked-on showpiece, but a genuine eye-catcher that suits the character of the building. In the evening, when the street lamp in front glows and the blue evening sky sets the façade in scene, the building looks almost surreally beautiful. I took the photo and paused for a moment – you don’t necessarily expect a sight like that in Dormagen.
Around the building there are flagpoles, with the German flag and other national flags clearly visible among them. The trees along the street are wrapped in small fairy lights – subtle, but atmospheric. This is not a hyped-up event hotel, but a place with genuine character.
The room: slanted ceiling, rattan chairs and atmosphere
My room was under the roof – the slanted ceiling is clearly visible in my photo. Rooms like that are either charming or cramped. Here: clearly charming. The room was generously sized, clean and equipped with a small seating area: two armchairs with purple upholstery and a yellow decorative cushion, with a round glass table on a rattan frame in between. Simple, but coherent. This is not a design hotel with Instagram aesthetics – it’s a well-kept, homely room with a genuine atmosphere.
One more thing I noticed: anyone expecting a complimentary bottle of water on arrival will be disappointed. At the Friedestrom, that comes at a cost. A minor drawback, which I mention for the sake of completeness – it doesn’t change my overall impression.
The location: Rhine, Zons and historic city walls
The hotel is located right at the entrance to the historic small town of Zons – a medieval Rhine town with a preserved city wall that you really should see at least once. The Rhine setting is a genuine bonus: water, tranquillity, history – it has something. Guests staying here have the historic town centre practically on their doorstep.
Family-run – and you can tell
What impressed me most: the atmosphere inside the hotel. This is not an anonymous chain hotel. You can tell there’s a family behind it – in the personal interaction, in the attention to detail, in the continuity. Places like this have become rare. The team is present without being intrusive, professional without seeming stiff.
The Friedestrom is also a popular venue for weddings and special celebrations – the ambience explains why. The Christmas dinner here is said to be worth seeing as well: abundant food, good service, ample parking. I can easily imagine coming back here outside of a regular overnight stay.

- Location right on the Rhine and at historic Zons – hard to beat
- Room spacious, clean, with genuine character (attic room recommended)
- Family team that you can truly feel
- Exterior view in the evening: one of the most beautiful hotel entrances I know
- Only downside: no complimentary welcome water
