Der Bliesgauer – a circuit through the biosphere reserve

When people ask me where you can hike really well in south-west Germany without having to travel for hours, one area keeps coming to mind: the Bliesgau. The biosphere reserve on the border with Alsace is one of those quiet landscapes you only truly come to appreciate when you’re right in the middle of it. That’s exactly what happens on Der Bliesgauer – a point-to-point hike that brings together the best of the region on a single trail.

What to expect on the tour

The route passes predominantly through open farmland, repeatedly broken up by small patches of woodland and old solitary trees. Three motifs have stayed with me in particular:

• The old oak on the gravel track: Somewhere in the middle of the tour it simply stands there – a mighty oak whose canopy of leaves offers real relief on hot days. I stopped there for a longer break than planned. Not a bad sign.
• Poppies at the grain field: Anyone out here in early summer – that is, late May to early July – experiences something that’s hard to put into words: the red poppies stand thick along the field’s edge, behind them the bright green of the grain, above it a blue sky. That’s no cliché, that’s the Bliesgau.
• Wildflower meadow with hill view: This viewpoint somewhere along the route rewards you with a panorama over the gently rolling hills of the biosphere reserve. Early in the morning there’s still mist lying in the valleys – that’s the best light for photos.

Getting there and parking

The exact starting point depends on where you begin the tour – it’s best to save the Komoot route beforehand and use the navigation. The Bliesgau is easily accessible by car, and there are parking options in many of the smaller villages along the route. Public transport works too, as the Saarland-Takt network is fairly well developed in the region.

Best time of year

My clear favourite is early summer – meaning May and June. That’s when the poppies bloom, the meadows are in full splendour, and it’s not yet as oppressively hot as in midsummer. In autumn the route is lovely too, when the oaks turn colour and the air becomes clearer. In winter the open farmland is a bit bleak, honestly.

Equipment

Sturdy hiking boots make sense, as gravel paths and field tracks can get muddy after rain. Don’t forget sun protection – the route passes through open terrain for long stretches with little shade, apart from the aforementioned oak. Bring water; places to stop for food and drink are scarce along the way.

Food and drink

In the Bliesgau there are occasional inns and Straußwirtschaften in the surrounding villages that serve Saarland cuisine. It’s worth doing a quick Google search beforehand and checking opening times if necessary – not all of them are open every day.

Who is the tour suitable for?

Der Bliesgauer is not a technically demanding route. The ascents are moderate, the path is well marked. That makes the tour ideal for anyone looking for a relaxed half-day or full-day hike where looking around and taking your time comes first – not the pace. Families with older children will manage fine. For hard-core endurance hikers, it’s more of a leisurely stroll.

What stays with you after the tour? The image of the red poppies in front of the grain field. The stillness under the old oak. And the feeling of having seen a landscape that simply doesn’t look like this everywhere. Hiking in the Bliesgau – this is one of those tours where you finish not tired, but somehow recharged.
