A yellow baroque castle, a moat and wild climbing roses – Schloss Dyck captivated me from the very first moment.
Some places catch you off guard. Schloss Dyck in Jüchen is one of those places. The first time I turned the corner and the yellow manor house appeared before me – with red climbing roses on the façade, a neatly raked gravel courtyard in front and a dark grey slate roof gleaming in the May sun – I had to stop for a moment. The photo I took of the outbuilding captures exactly that moment: warm sandstone façade, white sash windows, roses climbing up trellises, and tall old trees behind them. No frills, no tourist backdrop. Just a well-kept place with real substance.
The park – more than a stroll
The park is expansive, and I mean that seriously. It took me a good three hours before I felt I had seen everything at least once. The tree stock is impressive – old, imposing specimens that give the whole place an almost reverential quality. Particularly beautiful: the castle itself can be photographed from the park across a moat. That is exactly the view I captured – the yellow main building, framed by drooping willow green and old deciduous trees, reflecting water in front, and a sweeping meadow in the foreground. An image you don’t forget in a hurry.
Those who come in spring will find blossoms in every variation. I came across a flower I couldn’t identify at first – a delicate orchid with a white-violet, pouch-shaped calyx and dark violet veined petals. I had never seen a plant like that growing outdoors before. The park holds botanical surprises for those who look carefully.
The castle and its many faces
Schloss Dyck is not a museum you visit once and tick off the list. The ensemble has many faces: there is an event room, a café, an orangery and even a historic stable – each location with its own character. I could easily imagine why weddings, concerts and other events are held here on a regular basis. The setting simply has a lot to offer.
Those who come at Christmas time will find a Christmas market that stands out clearly from the usual markets – atmospheric surroundings, artisan workshops, fine food and things you won’t find elsewhere. This is one of the few Christmas markets where I would genuinely feel I was experiencing something special.
Staying overnight on the castle grounds
There is also the option to stay overnight on the grounds. The breakfast with a view of the castle complex that everyone here raves about sounds like exactly the right way to start such a morning. Those who need to leave early will apparently get their breakfast early too – the friendly staff make that happen.

- The park is worth a visit at any time of year – in autumn with dahlias and colourful foliage, in spring with roses and orchids

Schloss Dyck is not a place for a quick detour between two other appointments. You should take your time, walk the paths, let the rose-covered façades sink in and sit somewhere on a bench where you can see the castle across the water. Then it all makes sense.
