Schloss Dyck Wandern: baroque castle, moat and spring blossom

Schloss Dyck Wandern combines baroque architecture with a genuine park atmosphere – and in May it gets even better.

I was honestly sceptical. A walk through a well-kept landscape park doesn’t sound at first like what I’d call hiking. But the Schloss Dyck Park-Rundweg near Jüchen in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss taught me otherwise – and pretty quickly, within the first few metres on the winding gravel path.

What to expect on the Schloss Dyck Park-Rundweg

The circular route leads directly through the expansive landscape park surrounding the baroque moated castle Schloss Dyck. The castle itself, with its onion towers and ochre-yellow façade, is a real eye-catcher even from the park meadow. Early in the morning, when a light mist still hangs over the moat and the old deciduous trees are reflected in it, that’s one of those scenes you should genuinely get up early for.

The route is not a fitness challenge – it’s short, flat and easy to walk. What makes it special is the density of subjects in a small space: there’s the mighty chestnut tree at the centre of the park, unfurling its fresh green in May. There are the dark red tulip beds along the entrance path, still glowing well into May. And then the view from the park path behind the castle, where the entire ensemble – moat, bridge, façade – opens up before you like a painting.

The best time: early May

If I had to make a recommendation, it’s clear: early May. The beds are at their peak, the hedges in the garden area freshly trimmed, and the morning light falls softly through the still thin canopy of the old deciduous trees. The manor house with its characteristic round windows and the climbing plants on the façade feels particularly alive at this time of year – the plants are just coming into leaf, everything is in motion.

Those who photograph should not arrive too late. The best light conditions at the moat near the farm building are shortly after sunrise – the moat is still in shadow while the light falls at an angle onto the old masonry. In the evening, the viewpoint on the park path is worth another visit when the sun is low and the yellow castle façade glows golden.

Getting there and parking

Schloss Dyck is located in Jüchen, Rhein-Kreis Neuss, easily reached via the A46 (exit Jüchen). There is a paid car park directly at the castle. Arriving by train is a bit more involved – the nearest railway station is in Grevenbroich, from where it’s still a few kilometres.

Refreshments

On the grounds there is a café that is open depending on the season and events. For a visit in May it’s worth a quick check of the opening hours on the Schloss Dyck website in advance – the estate is regularly used for garden festivals, which means crowds on the one hand, but also more catering options than usual on the other.

Equipment

• Sturdy shoes are not strictly necessary – the paths in the park are gravelled or mown, so manageable even in normal trainers
• Camera or smartphone with a good wide angle: the castle view from the park meadow needs focal length downwards, not upwards
• Spring jacket: mornings in the park can be noticeably cool, the moat keeps the temperature low

What you shouldn’t miss

• The view of the moat near the farm building – quieter and more beautiful than the main entrance
• The chestnut avenue in the rear part of the park, especially when morning light falls through the tree canopy
• The garden area with the topiary: sounds formal, but looks surprisingly lively in spring
• The panoramic viewpoint at the end of the loop for the classic castle view – ideal as the last shot of the day
