Astro-Erlebnisweg trail by the lake: reeds, stations and knowledge about the stars

The Astro-Erlebnisweg combines natural shoreline, rustling reeds and knowledge about space – for everyone who wants more than an ordinary walk.

It’s just after eight in the morning, the sky hangs low, and yet the mood outside is anything but grey. In a meadow stands a silver-coloured spherical balloon on a tripod – the first station of the Astro-Erlebnisweg, which immediately draws you into a different world of thought. This is how this tour begins: unusual, tangible, rooted in the earth and yet with eyes turned upward.

What to expect on the Astro-Erlebnisweg

The path follows the bank of a large lake, past dense reed beds where the stems sway in the wind and the water quietly laps against the stones. Between the natural sections, information boards keep appearing – sometimes about the moon and its phases, sometimes about the planets in our solar system. One station features a tactile 3D model of the moon where you can actually feel the craters. This is not child’s play – I stood in front of it myself for longer than planned.

The striking pavilion with its round roof and angled supports looks almost like a landed spaceship right on the lakeshore. Next to it, a wooden photo frame invites you to take a snapshot – simple, but somehow charming. You step behind it, frame the lake, and suddenly the photo makes sense. Little ideas like this run through the entire route.

Nature and astronomy – no contradiction

What sets the Astro-Erlebnisweg apart from other themed trails: nature itself is not neglected. Egyptian geese on the meadow, orange-red rowan berries on a mountain ash, reeds moving with the wind – all of this happens between the stations. The route is not a pure open-air museum, but a loop where you get both: a nature experience and bite-sized knowledge.

Anyone who comes back to the lake at night has one more option: Behind the Bosener Mühle is one of a total of six stargazing spots in the area, equipped with a rotating star map and a Polaris finder. This is a genuine insider tip – during the day you walk right past it, but with binoculars under your arm and a clear autumn sky it’s a completely different experience. The project is part of the larger initiative “Sankt Wendeler SternenLand”, which is specifically reducing light pollution in the region to create better conditions for stargazing – an approach that is so far unique in Saarland.

Practical information for the tour

Equipment

  • Sturdy footwear recommended; the path is walkable in wet conditions too
  • Binoculars are worthwhile – both for birds in the reeds and for the telescope attachments at the stations
  • For children: definitely bring a pen or your phone for the quiz boards

Getting there and parking

The route runs around the Bostalsee; car parks are available directly at the leisure centre. Easy to reach by car – in the summer months, arrive early, as the lake is a popular day-trip destination and the car parks fill up quickly.

Food and drink

There are several places to eat along the lakeshore, including the restaurant directly at the campsite. If you start the tour early, you can conveniently save the lunch break for the end.

Best time to visit

We were out on a cloudy summer morning – the muted light gave the reeds and the lake water a calm, almost melancholic mood that I really liked. In autumn, the colours along the rows of trees become even more intense. Anyone wanting to use the stargazing spots should come on a clear evening in spring or autumn.

Conclusion: More than a walk

The Astro-Erlebnisweg is not a route you simply tick off. It invites you to pause – sometimes because of an information board, sometimes because of a grey heron’s shadow in the reeds, sometimes because of the pavilion that seems to have no place in a lake landscape and yet somehow fits right in. A loop that’s worth it – whether with children, as a couple, or solo with a camera and binoculars in tow.
