The Traumschleife Der Hochwälder leads through forest clearings, past freshly mown fields and a calm lake. 9.3 km of quiet summer walking.

There are trails that hit you with a viewpoint every five minutes, and then there are trails like the Traumschleife Der Hochwälder (one of the premium Traumschleifen [dream loops] of the Saar-Hunsrück nature region) — trails that let you actually breathe. This 9.3 km circular route moves gently through a landscape that feels genuinely unhurried: gravel paths along forest edges, long tree shadows falling across bright green meadows, a wooden boardwalk stepping out of the shade into a wildflower meadow, and, near the end, a still lake that almost stops you in your tracks.
How the trail begins
The first steps set the tone immediately. A gravel path curves away from the forest fringe into open summer meadows, a hunter’s high seat visible at the treeline, the fields rolling away into a distant valley. The light is warm and direct — the kind of midsummer morning light that makes even ordinary grass look vivid. The trail runs alongside the forest rather than plunging straight into it, which gives you that pleasant alternation of shade and sun right from the outset.
The path is characterised by varied forest passages with beautiful clearings, as well as idyllic stream valleys — and you feel that variety within the first kilometre. One moment you are on an open field track with long shadows striping the grass; the next, dense summer vegetation closes in on both sides, ferns and wildflowers pressing against weathered wooden trail posts.
The middle stretch: meadows, field tracks and a boardwalk
The bulk of the route stays relatively flat — the trail is easy to rate, as there is little elevation to overcome , which makes the 9.3 km feel relaxed rather than grinding. The elevation profile confirms it: you start and finish at roughly the same height, with only a gentle rise to around 434 m at the highest point.
What I remember most clearly from the middle section is the contrast between two consecutive stretches. First, a freshly mown meadow field opens up to the right of the path — cut hay lying in pale golden rows, the smell of it still in the air, a dense mixed forest wall behind it under a clear blue sky. Then, not long after, a narrow wooden boardwalk bridges the transition from shaded forest edge back into a sun-drenched wildflower meadow: one of those small trail details that photograph beautifully but are actually just as good in real life.
One lesser-known aspect worth knowing: the trail has been rated by the Deutsches Wanderinstitut with 77 experience points — a score that reflects the genuine variety of surfaces and scenery rather than any single dramatic highlight.
The lake — the quiet centrepiece
Towards the latter part of the loop, the trees pull back and a calm lake comes into view. The water was dark and mirror-smooth when I was there, reflecting the lush mixed forest on the far bank and a completely clear blue sky above. A gentle breeze put tiny ripples across the surface. Reeds along the shoreline caught the warm afternoon light sideways, translucent and golden. There is a roped-off section on one side, suggesting the lake sees swimmers in summer — though on this particular afternoon the shore was quiet.
It is one of those spots where you naturally stop, look, and say nothing for a minute. No waterfall, no dramatic gorge — just water, trees, sky and light. Sometimes that is enough.
Practical notes
- Distance & duration: 9.3 km; plan roughly 2.5 hours of walking time, more if you stop at the lake.
- Terrain: Predominantly gravel paths and firm field tracks; the wooden boardwalk section may be slippery after rain — trail shoes are sufficient in dry summer conditions, but boots give more confidence on the wetter passages.
- Signage: The Traumschleife Der Hochwälder is waymarked as part of the Traumschleifen Saar-Hunsrück network; it runs in large parts parallel to the Stausee-Tafeltour, the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig and the Bergener trail , so you will see multiple signs at junctions — follow the Hochwälder markers specifically.
- Family-friendly: The trail is walkable year-round and particularly suitable for families ; the gentle gradients make it manageable for older children.
- Food & drink: Carry your own water and snacks for the trail itself. The lake area may offer options nearby in summer, but do not count on it — check locally before you go.
- Best season for this style of hike: Summer gives you the long light, the wildflowers and the reeds in full colour. The trail is also officially open all year.
Worth knowing before you go
The Traumschleife Der Hochwälder sits within the Saar-Hunsrück nature park, a landscape that the German Hiking Institute consistently rates among the best-waymarked in the country. If you enjoy this loop, the trail is partly congruent with the reservoir panel tour , meaning you can extend or combine routes without doubling back on identical ground. The full Komoot route (ID 3048947876) is a good reference for the exact current track.
